She founded The Act 1 Group, (www.Act1Group.com ) in 1978 as a one-desk placement firm; it now operates globally and offers staffing services across North America via AppleOne (www.AppleOne.com), A-Check Global (www.ACheckGlobal.com), which provides background checks & screenings across global geographies, and Agile-1 (www.Agile-1.com), which provides solutions to mitigate and streamline companies' hiring processes for contingent workers (temporary, contractors, seasonal, project-based) and/or direct workers (full/part-time employees, FTEs). Agile-1’s proprietary technologies automate the hiring processes across an organization, while the onsite or remote programs manage multiple staffing agencies, named resources, project-based workers, or recruitment processes. Together, the offered services and technologies improve visibility, decrease liability, and overhead, and save clients’ costs while effectively managing workforce.

 

She is renowned for her civic, as well as business, engagements. Via scholarship funding, and personal service, she supports universities (Harvard, University of Southern California, California State University, San Bernardino, and her own alma mater, North Carolina A&T), women's support organizations (WBENC, The Trusteeship), minority serving organizations (NMSDC, Urban League, LAEDC, and more), and is a mentor to others through personal work and media engagements.

She was inducted into the NBCA Hall of Fame. She received The Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of the USA's 44th President, Barack Obama, on January 28th, 2017. She was BET’s first ever BET Honors Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2013, she was appointed a USA Ambassador of Energy at the White House.
